We are seeking a PhD student to join the group of Assistant Professor Lisandro Milocco at Stockholm University and SciLifeLab.
The project focuses on the mathematical and computational modeling of development and evolution, with the goal of understanding and predicting how developmental processes shape evolutionary outcomes.
Possible research directions include quantitative genetics, evolutionary prediction, and dynamical systems approaches to modeling development and evolution.
Profile: Applicants should have a background in biology and an interest in quantitative approaches, or training in quantitative fields (e.g. mathematics, physics, computer science) with a strong interest in evolution. Skills in programming, statistics, or dynamical systems modeling are especially welcome.

A funded research project will investigate an innovative strategy to improve gene drive efficiency in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes through novel target site selection, an approach not previously studied in this species. Specifically, we will investigate the potential of targeting a haplolethal gene for effective genetic control of Ae. aegypti populations. We are seeking for a postdoc with prior experience with modeling gene drive systems and/or mosquito population genetic to work on the project. The modeling aspect of the project will focus on developing computational models to analyze the intricate dynamics of a homing rescue drive targeting haplolethal gene in Aedes aegypti mosquito populations. Additionally, it will evaluate the efficacy (ecological and epidemiological) of various drive mechanisms based on this platform, including population replacement strategies, population suppression approaches, and toxin-antidote systems.

This exciting position in computational biology combines the development of novel computational methods involving control theory with practical systems modelling, simulation, and data analysis, applied first and foremost to the field of platelet biology and haemostasis.
The postholder will play a key role in a project that will develop novel computational means for the objective evaluation of purpose in biology. These theoretical efforts are paired with a bespoke experimental programme focusing on cell communication and coordination, which innovatively considers thrombi as “transient tissues”. (Candidates without prior exposure to cell biology, and specifically platelet biology and haemostasis, are expected to rapidly acquire the necessary domain knowledge and be interested in building a career in the field.)
The postholder will work closely with the experimental team in the School of Biological Sciences and the Reading School of Pharmacy, which will include a second PDRA starting on the project at the same time.

The complexity of biology makes it hard to distinguish correlation from causation. In addition, the explosion of biological data and AI tools has led some to question the need for identifying causal relationships to achieve predictive power and make practical progress in biology. This symposium will focus on causal inference from different kinds of biological data and mathematical approaches, including the extent to which machine learning and AI tools can reveal causal relationships.
Registration closes the 25th of September.
